Angels Amidst Chaos

Boom. Another bomb drops far away; this has become the norm of our days, replacing the roosters that used to wake us. I stretched my body, numb from sleeping on the uneven ground. The sky is grey, still filled with the smoke from the firings and the remains of fallen buildings.

I still remember the days we used to run around the city, stealing sweets from Karim uncle. I'm pretty sure he knew we stole, but he never said anything. I remember the days when the sun shone in the morning, peeking from the clouds, and how the sky used to be pinkish like cotton candy in the evening. I remember my mom promising to treat me to ice cream the next day.

But then everything changed overnight. The home I knew was no longer mine. The neighborhood I grew up in became rubble. The people I knew were lying on the ground bleeding.

Wails and prayers filled the air, replacing the sounds of laughter and joy. More than anything, I missed my mom's warm embrace, her tucking me in bed, and her sweet goodnights. I missed her picking me up whenever I fell and her words of wisdom that always made me happy she was my mom.

I still don't understand why this happened to us. What did we ever do? All the people I knew, the friendliest people, are just corpses now. What did they do to deserve this?

All I wish for now is to see the birds soaring in the sky peacefully, the moon shining brightly in the night sky destroying the darkness, and to walk through the streets with my friends, joking all the way and only having to worry about homework.

I wish that I could be a normal kid in this world.
